I don’t watch a lot of television, and I think most of the shows on air today can be qualified as “hot garbage” and appeal to the lowest common denominator. In fact, watching some of these shows makes me feel as though I am losing brain cells.
It’s a rare occurrence that a smart comedy comes along and blows the competition out of the water. Curb Your Enthusiasm is such a show, although it is no longer on the air. Larry David, the star, is the producer of Seinfeld. Already that’s enough to garner a wide fan base. Larry plays himself, amicably called “LD”.
This show is so witty, and the comedy so subversive and offensive, that the show is not for the faint of heart. Some of my favourite characters, aside from LD, are Susie, the sharp-tongue wife of Jeff who tells it like it is, and Leon of the Blacks family.
Larry isn’t afraid of anyone, and denounces others’ behaviour, which sometimes gets him in trouble. The show is a witty social commentary.
The Palestinian Chicken episode, season 8, episode 3, is a classic.
I hope that the show makes a comeback one day! It’s rare to watch such a comedic gem.
